Author Hew Strachan – WW1 Professor of the History of War

The popular view of WW1 is dominated by cliche. Young British soldiers many of them budding poets, were led to early and ghastly deaths in muddy wastes by incompetant generals for reasons that were seemingly futile. And although cliches are not necessarily lies, they are at best a selective view of the truth.
Building on his mammoth research. The one volume history called ‘The First World War’ provides a narrative structure of the ten part TV series which provides a truly global vision of the conflict.
It became a world war long before the USA entered the war and the Russian revolution of 1917.
