This is Mrs Isabella Butcher’s father who was enlisted into the French front-line for building railways.
He was awarded The fleur-de-lis that is used as a decorative design or symbol. Many of the saints are often depicted with a lily, most prominently St. Joseph.
Since France was originally a Catholic nation, the Fleur de lis became commonly used “at one and the same time, religious, political, dynastic, artistic, emblematic, and symbolic”, especially in French heraldry. You had to be appreciated to get this!
The picture is Mr Butcher’s daily diary.
