A gripping, adroitly written courtroom drama first staged in London’s West End in 1994. The play follows the trial of James Highwood, a television commentator who hosts a popular programme exposing legal injustices, charged for the murder of his severely handicapped child. Having refused legal representation he is conducting his own defence, admitting responsibility but pleading manslaughter. The ensuing trial brings him into conflict with the Judge and the prosecuting Counsel, a well-known Catholic and pro-lifer. This is a play with a bleak plot and very poignant moments, but smattered with wit, humour and clever insights. Full of tensions and life, with sharp and clever exchanges between the characters. A convincing courtroom drama.
