Metro passengers faced severe disruption as a section of the line closed due to a power fault.
There were no trains running between Pelaw and Brockley Whins because of the overhead line problem.
Northern Rail trains between Newcastle and Sunderland were also at a standstill.
Network Rail, which owns the infrastructure, assessed the problem and carried out repairs.
Services are getting back to normal now. Buses are no longer accepting Metro tickets.
In the latest update, Metro tweeted: “We no longer have ticket acceptance or taxis running. The service has resumed, and trains are running, but not to timetable.”
